The baby product industry has reinvented itself to cater to the needs of a new generation of parents that are extremely read read on the subject of child birth and are indeed more environmentally conscious when it comes to planning for their child’s future and deciding what baby products will be purchased to care for their newest member of the family. It is important to arm yourself with the proper knowledge as to where, when and how the products you choose for your family were made

Five major ingredients to avoid when purchasing baby products:

Phthalates – Chemicals found in most mainstream consumer products. They are found in soft plastic toys, such as bath toys for babies. They are also found in baby powders, baby shampoos, lotions and fragrance.

Mineral Oil – One of the most commonly used products on babies and potentially the most dangerous.Serious carcinogens can be found in mineral oil. Mineral oil, also known as baby oil, can cause dehydration to a babies skin by blocking the absorption of natural moisture.

Lanolin – Often used for moisturizing or diaper cream may cause an allergic contact skin rash. Lanolin, derived from sheep also contains pesticides that were used on sheep and wool products

Cornstarch – Not recommended for use on yeast related diaper rashes, cornstarch encourages the growth of yeast that will perpetuate diaper rash instead of cure it.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – Before you buy baby shampoo, think again. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is mainly used to create foam in bath and body products. It can cause irritation to a babies scalp as well as penetrate an infants eyes and systemic tissue this is of concern to babies who are under going substantial eye growth.

Most ingredients found in popular name brand adult and infant skin care products are extremely harmful to delicate and sensitive new skin. Mom’s – what do you give your child or use on your child or in the home that’s “organic” ?

no breast milk answers please. There’s just so much out there and its overwhelming… food, clothes, toys, cleaning products, baby wash, etc. etc. I’m just really curious… every time I think of trying natural or organic – I get overwhelmed and just give up. I’m just curious. What do you use and how did you start?

We use natural cleaning products (Shaklee) and bath products (Avalon Organics). We don’t use unnecessary things like baby powders, lotions, oils, etc. – just shampoo for cleaning hair and body. We use cloth diapers and Seventh Generation wipes. We get all organic produce that’s available (we don’t buy non-organic if it’s on the dirty dozen list); we just started buying organic meats for both health and ethical reasons, but it’s so expensive that we’re just eating less meat these days. Basically, I try to buy foods with natural ingredients whether they’re organic or not. I don’t buy anything with ingredients I don’t recognize or chemicals, especially foods with highly chemically processed high fructose corn syrup, food colorings and sugar substitutes. We use a natural dry cleaner, but don’t buy organic clothes or toys. I wish I could do it all, but haven’t gotten there yet. I’m not obsessed, but feel that every little step is important. This has been an evolution over many years and I expect that we will continue to change our habits more in the years to come. Don’t try to do it all at once. As you read and become aware of the issues, then make the changes. And don’t let anyone tell you it’s not necessary. Every positive step you take toward consuming less chemicals or removing chemicals from your environment is hugely beneficial to you and your family.
