3 month old baby, transition to crib, question about “Lovey’s”?

We are beginning to transition my 3 month old little girl into her room in her crib at night. A book I have says that “loveys” can help with this, as they can pick up your scent and be soothing to your baby when falling asleep. I bought a smallish organic fabric doll, in kinda a flat shape, which I could easily wear in my shirt for the scent. However, given that my baby is three months old, is it a bad idea to place this doll in her crib to help her go to sleep? Some things I have read have made it seem like any age is ok, but some people say absolutely not because of the suffocation risk. What do you think?

Technically they should not have toys until they are rolling well. A lot of books recommend that you use a rolled recieving blanket in a crib. I personally do not see how this would be safer than a small, non-puffy toy, in fact it seems less safe. If you place the doll in a corner, I think it is extremely unlikely that it would be a problem. However, if it is going to cause you to worry, then it isn’t worth it. I know we have a stuffed toy with a white noise machine in it that hangs on a velcro loop on the crib, so it is well above the level of the matress. I don’t know if a “lovey” would still give a comforting smell from a bit away, but if so a good compromise might be to do something similar – maybe hang it from the outside of the crib or so it is above her face level

How do I get the plastic smell out of a new baby playard?

I registered for the “Nature’s Purest-Hug Me” playard from Babies R Us because it was labelled as organic and healthier. Well okay, the fabrics are organic cotton but the playard mattress is still smelly vinyl plastic! I set it up last Friday and now, almost 4 days later, it still stinks. I’m trying to avoid baby products that outgas right down to the mattress and now we are left with this thing. I will be using this for naps mostly, as we will be co-sleeping in the bedroom.

I dont know if I can afford to replace it now but if anyone knows of an organic playard mattress (cotton, wool, rubber, etc) that I can replace it with, it would be great. But for now, how do I clean it? Is there something I can put on it to remove the smell? No bleach or lysol or more chemicals please.

Why dont you put the mattress outside for several days to ventilate… the smell will eventually dissipate with all the outside air… If you are still unhappy… How about cut a piece of plywood or thin fiberboard (sold at most home improvement stores) to fit the inside of the playpen and then cover it with cotton batting and then a playyard sheet over the top. Or if you are really crafty, you can take an old baby comforter and sew some elastic to the edges using a sewing machine… then place this over the fiberboard to make a soft cushiony area for baby.
