Many parents have recently decided to only use natural baby products on their children. What has caused this recent trend? Are there any real benefits to it?

Studies have shown that children are adversely affected by harmful chemicals even before they turn five. According to research, thirty five percent of exposure to harmful chemicals, in a life time, occurs before the age of five years. Parents are naturally concerned about this exposure.

Why Do Children Need Natural Baby Products?

Children are most susceptible when they are young. This is the time when we, as parents, have to take extreme care of them. This is the time we should be very careful and focus on only using natural baby products.

Their skin is not as resistant as ours. It is much thinner and weaker. They are in the danger of being affected by pesticides and herbicides more than ever during their early years. Their immune system is not fully developed and is nowhere near its best.

Dangers of Cotton

Clothes are one area where parents should take care. Conventional cotton is grown using a lot of pesticides and herbicides. As cotton is not a food crop, no regulations govern the use of pesticides. Close to two and a half billion dollars is spent by the cotton industry on harmful chemicals. These pesticides and herbicides are exposed directly to your child. Organic cotton is grown with zero pesticides ensuring the complete safety of your child.

Organic Baby Clothes

Conventional cotton needs a lot of processing. This extra processing makes the cloth lose its natural softness. The over processed cloth might give your baby a rash or an infection. Sometimes, it might lead to an allergic reaction. Apart from cotton, there are other things you should take care of in normal clothes. The dyes are made from harmful metals and the snaps are made from nickel. This poses a serious danger to your child.

Healthy and Safe Baby Food

Your child needs to grow up healthy for which he needs healthy food. Pesticides and other harmful chemicals are a constant threat with foods. Going organic ensures your child gets all the nutrients he needs. There are many brands in the market that produce completely healthy organic food. The organic food is grown using natural substances and pose no danger. You also know the exact ingredients of your child’s food.

Other Natural Baby Products

Using natural diapers is a great option too. There are no diaper rashes or infections. The fabric breathes easily. Your child is very comfortable. Woollen diapers are a very good option. They are very soft and very hygienic as well. Natural baby products including organic toys ensure your child is playing and growing up in a safe and sound environment. You will also be doing your bit to make the planet a much safer place by going organic.

Does anyone know of a website that sells clothes specifically for cloth diapered babies?

I came across a site a while back that sold organic clothes specifically designed for babies and toddlers that wear cloth diapers. I thought I bookmarked it but I guess I didn’t. Does anyone know about this site or another similar one?
Because I am starting a cloth diaper business and would like to sell that particular type of clothing.

I don’t know but I’m sure that if you ask on either mothering.com or any of the yahoo groups about cloth diapering they would know.

I’m sure there’s more than one. Actually on mothering.com you will probably find some nice WAHM businesses that make clothes for babies that wear cloth diapers.

Sids Prevention — Thirteen Tips

SIDS is NOT just something that happens to other people, and to a large extent it is preventable.

Informing yourself about the causes of SIDS, and recognized safe sleeping practices, can go a long way towards preventing a tragedy…

What is SIDS?

SIDS (or sudden infant death syndrome) is the sudden death of an infant, under one year of age that remains unexplained after a complete post-mortem investigation. In the US it occurs in approximately 1 in 1,000 babies. Most cases occur between the ages of two and four months. For unknown reasons, SIDS is higher in males than females by a ratio of 1.5 to 1.0.

What Causes SIDS?

SIDS seems to be a combination of many factors: immature development of cardio-respiratory control mechanisms, failure to wake from sleep in response to breathing difficulties, medical conditions that compromise breathing, and unsafe sleeping practices. SIDS researchers now also believe that many SIDS deaths are attributable to suffocation rather than a defective physiological or neurological response from the baby. Suffocation results from the baby breathing and re-breathing the same air until the oxygen in the air is depleted.

Preventing SIDS

1. Place your baby on the back to sleep, for every sleep, unless advised otherwise by your pediatrician. Back-sleeping babies awaken easier; have a lower chance of getting overheated; breathe more oxygen and are less likely to suffocate.

2. If possible, breastfeed your baby. Breastfed babies have an up to three times lower SIDS rate.

3. Do not smoke during pregnancy, and keep your baby’s environment smoke-free. Studies show that exposure to cigarette smoking at least doubles the risk of SIDS.

4. Don’t let your baby get too warm. SIDS researchers believe that overheating may cause respiratory control centers in some babies to fail.

5. Make sure that your baby cannot suffocate, by ensuring that baby’s nose and mouth, are not obstructed by bedding or objects such as soft toys.

6. Make up the baby crib according to safe sleeping practices.

* Place baby’s feet at the foot of the baby crib so that he or she can’t wriggle under the covers.

* Covers should come no higher than baby’s chest.

* Use a thin blanket. Soft crib bedding can suffocate infants.

* Tuck the blanket in well on both sides of the crib under the baby crib mattress.

* Remove quilts, soft toys, pillows, comforters and other bedding from the baby crib.

* Use a clean, firm, snug fitting crib mattress and a fitted crib sheet, preferably organic.

* Crib bumpers are not recommended.

7. Make sure that there is a good flow of fresh air. Open a window, or keep the door partially open.

8. Use a baby crib that meets current safety standards, preferably organic. The chemicals out-gassed by wood veneers and finishes are considered among the possible causes of SIDS.

9. Make use of an apnea monitor.

10. If possible let baby sleep in the parent’s room for the first year. For unknown reasons, the close proximity of a baby to its parents during sleep has been shown to reduce SIDS risk. (Note that baby should NOT be placed IN the parent’s bed due to the risk of suffocation.)

11. Consider offering a pacifier at naptime and bedtime. Research now indicates an association between pacifier use and reduced SIDS risk.

12. Don’t be in too much of a hurry for your baby to sleep through the night. Babies that are trained to sleep through the night, before they are physically ready, are at a higher SIDS risk.

13.Ensure that others caring for the infant (child care provider, relative, friend, babysitter) are aware of these SIDS prevention measures.

When did you stop sterilising?

My Daughter will be one in 3 weeks and up until this point, I’ve not been ashamed to say that I am a sterilising maniac. Everything gets sterilised from dummies and bottles to spoons, medicine droppers and teething toys. I am a self diagnosed OCD sufferer. So, some friends of mine still sterilise things for their two year old, some friends stopped sterilising once their child hit six months and I have friends that are somewhere in the middle. I know that its ‘good’ for babies to not be wrapped in cotton wool and for them to be exposed to good bacterias etc but I just can not bring myself to throw away the steriliser.

When did you stop sterilising?
So my guess is that the general consensus is that I need to stop sterilising, lol

Throw it away hon! LOL.
It’s really unnecessary to sterilize everything. It’s good for your baby to be exposed to germs and bacteria, it ups their immune system so that they can ward off the flu and cold viruses, etc. Hot, soapy water is a perfect way to clean almost everything. You can buy an antibacterial soap and run really hot water in to the sink and just let bottles, toys, etc soak.
