Am I a bad mom?

I have never breastfed any of my children, they were all bottlefed (and circumcised). I work full time. I use pacifiers and car seats. I buy disposable diapers and wash my children’s clothes with my own. I wash bottles in a sink full of soapy water and I do not sterilize them. I let my 2 year old watch 30 minutes of TV a day. My children eat McDonald’s once a month and I do not buy organic food. I feed my seven month old jarred baby food. And I do not allow my children to sleep in my bed and they have learned to go to sleep in their own beds by crying it out (and so far they have no long term psychological problems or resentment towards me and my husband). After reading all of the answers to some of the parenting questions you would think CPS would need to be called and my children should be taken away. Anyone else do the same?
Did it say somewhere in this paragraph that I was lacking joy in my life?

Kids survive all kinds of stuff.

I think that some people strive to just be ‘good enough’ as parents until it’s over, while others strive to take it on as a challenge, researching & learning & doing the best they can during the short time they have before the children are grown.

It’s just different ways of going about it.

I think that, in comparison to some parents & some parenting practices, you’re trying a little harder, while in comparison to others, you are just getting by.

I did lots of the ‘good parent’ things that you are sarcastically deriding here – co-sleep, breastfed, didn’t circ, cloth diapered, etc. But, we let the kids watch much more TV than you do and, for a while there, went to McD’s once a week (on the way home from the children’s museum, though).

You might find more joy in your life if you stop worrying about where you are in comparison to others & just try to do what makes you feel like you’re doing what you feel is important with your own life.

Edit – no, you don’t mention joy or your lack of it specifically, but you did actually ask this question, “Am I a bad mom?”.

Naturepedic Organic Baby Crib Mattresses

Naturepedic Organic Baby Crib Mattresses
Is an organic crib mattress worth the cost?

We’re looking at the naturepedic 252 coil organic crib mattress. It’s $400 ($320 if I can use the 20% coupon at buybuybaby).
I want to get the best for my baby– wondering if this mattress is worth it, or if anyone knows of another organic crib mattress out there that is a little more reasonably priced?
They do offer a lower grade one (150 coils) for $259 (which would be about $200 with the 20% discount). Good point about the foam vs. coil mattresses. I did not think of it that way.
Lauren- it’s the type of plastic that worries me. This mattress is covered with food grade polyethylene– but perhaps there is a lower cost alternative out there that offers the same thing?
Doug- that is a very good point. Thank you!
I haven’t really been able to find one online for under $500 though.
If all else fails, I may just get the less expensive naturepedic one for $260.

If you can afford it, go for it. Naturepedic mattresses are made in the USA, too! We could not afford it, so we bought a nice tempur-pedic mattress from Babies ‘R’ Us and bought an organic cotton/modal mattress pad and crib sheets. I agree, that you shouldn’t get the foam mattresses, due to the fumes and gasses they emit. Best of luck to you!

Gift For Baby

Gift For Baby
What’s a good gift for Muslim baby? Is there anything special that would be most appreciated?

A friend (Christian) wants to know if there’s anything special that Muslims would appreciate for their baby girl, especially Indonesian Muslims. Is there anything (easily mailable) that’s traditional as a baby gift?

Please, serious answers only. Anything insulting, including racial slurs, is inappropriate and will be reported.

~well to me, a baby is a baby, muslim or otherwise. When I hear a friend is pregnant, I start a gift bag. I buy a nice baby gift bag that can be for a boy or a girl and start buying little things each week to put in it. Diapers (of course) bottles, baby nail clippers, bottle brushes, pacifiers, bibs, onesies, clothes, whatever! and since I am buying little things every week, it does not cost much. By the time the baby is here, there is a wonderful bag full of goodies for my friend. I think this is appropriate for any baby. If you dont want to do this, a gift card would be good, then they can pick out what they want~
