Raising Baby Green

Are you looking to raise a “green baby“? While parents certainly don’t want to bring up a child with jaudice, there are a number of eco friendly options available when it comes to raising baby green.

Babies have exceptionally sensitive skin and very delicate immune systems so baby items need to be selected with care. ‘Most people understand that residues from everything you put onto skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may also be responsible for rashes or irritation,’ says Catherine Cervasio, founder of Aromababy. Petro chemically derived ingredients, such as mineral oil, are reported to reduce the skin’s ability to ‘breathe’. Cervasio suggests less frequent bathing, less use of commercial products and a more natural approach to personal hygiene for babies and children.

Organic and natural fabrics for clothing and bedding will expose baby to less harmful chemicals and dyes that could be potential allergens. Toys should also be made from natural materials such as wood and cloth. Plastics, while durable, are made from petrochemicals and can contain polyvinyl chloride which has been known to release potentially harmful fumes – you’d be amazed at just how much plastic your child is exposed to from birth.

Food is another area where sustainable, organic choices can be made. First and foremost, breast milk is one of the most nutritious and environmentally friendly foods for baby – just consider the elimination of packaging and food miles. Andrew Radford, from the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, estimates that if every baby in the US was bottle-fed, almost 86,000 tonnes of tin plate would be required for 550 million discarded formula tins. Formula must also be heated up in plastic bottles, which of course, uses more energy and resources. ‘A 3 month-old bottle-fed baby needs 1 litre of water a day for mixing feeds,’ Radford says.

Most parents find that they become much ‘cleaner’ and more conscious of germs when they have a young child. The temptation may be to bleach, sanitise and sterilise everything baby can get his hands on. Opt for natural cleaners such as bicarbonate soda and vinegar, they do an effective job and minimise the family’s exposure to harmful chemicals.

By taking the extra steps to choose a greener and more sustainable lifestyle from day one, your child can get off on the right foot to being more aware and environmentally conscious. Eco minded parents are most likely to pass their values and principles down to their children. While it seems cliché, children are the future and we will depend on them to continue our quest to protect the environment.

Understanding Pre-fold Diapers

Pre-fold diapers are by far the most economical type of diaper on the market.  By using these simple but absorbent cloth diapers, you can save a substantial amount of money while putting soft, natural cotton or hemp next to your baby’s skin.  Some people are wary of using pre-fold diapers because they seem complicated or messy, but today’s many diaper options mean you can use pre-fold diapers without having to worry about pinning and sizing.

Because pre-fold diapers don’t have an outer shell, they do need to be used with a diaper cover.  Fortunately, there are diaper covers available in numerous sizes, styles and colors to suit every taste.  The beauty of these covers is that they do away with the need for diaper pins when putting on pre-fold diapers.  Simply fold the diaper into thirds so that the two thinner, outer layers are folded over onto the thicker, inner layer.  Now place it into a diaper cover and diaper your baby.  The snaps or Velcro will securely hold the diaper in place.  If there is extra material at either end of the diaper, you can fold it into the cover or, if you prefer, fold it out over the edge so that the cover doesn’t have to touch your baby’s skin.

Pre-fold Diapers may seem a bit old-fashioned, but they are practical for several reasons:

• They don’t add to the problem of landfill waste.
• You won’t need as many of them as your child grows.  You can adjust the size of your child’s diaper simply by folding more or less of the material over when you are putting the pre-fold diaper into a diaper cover.
• They are the least expensive of all cloth diapers but are just as absorbent and soft next to your baby’s skin.
• They are extremely versatile.  You can also use them as burp cloths or changing pads.

When shopping for pre-fold diapers, you may run into some confusion because there are so many different types available.  For the most part, pre-fold diapers are manufactured in either China or India, and each kind has its advantages.  You may also come across some hemp diapers that are made here in the United States.

Pre-fold diapers made in India may be bleached or unbleached, with unbleached being the most popular choice.  These are very absorbent and long lasting, but you will need to wash unbleached cotton diapers several times before they reach maximum absorbency.  Some people prefer the soft, natural beige of unbleached cotton because it hides stains better.  Chinese pre-fold diapers generally have a bit less quilting but do have serge stitching down the sides to prevent fraying.  These are white, bleached cotton and do shrink a bit less than unbleached cotton.  Regardless of where they are manufactured, look for pre-fold diapers labeled as “DSQ,” which means they are Diaper Service Quality, the highest standard for pre-fold cloth diapers.

Pre-fold diapers also come in a variety of thicknesses based the number of layers of material.  For instance, a 2x5x2 diaper will have two layers on the outer sides and a thicker middle section of five layers.  The most common thicknesses are 2x5x2, 4x6x4 and 4x8x4.  It’s largely a matter of preference.  A thicker diaper will be more absorbent, but the fit will be bulkier, so you need to gauge both comfort and how much your baby wets when deciding which you style you use.  You may want to consider using 2x5x2 diapers during the day, but switching to 4x8x4 at night if your baby sometimes soaks through a thinner pre-fold diaper at night.

Because they are so versatile and inexpensive, pre-fold diapers are becoming increasingly popular as parents discover how easy to use they really are.  Consider trying cost-effective, comfortable, pre-fold diapers on your baby if you’ve been looking for an inexpensive and easy way to keep your baby dry.

Organic foods for your baby

An important segment of the prepared baby food market, organic baby foods have become a popular choice for many parents worldwide. People tend to pay more attention to the benefits of organic food when it comes to babies, toddlers and young children. Many brands sell very well in the United States and they enjoy a great reputation. Even if they do not make a total replacement for homemade natural foods, organic baby foods could be a great choice when traveling or when you are short of other options to feed the baby.

Although most organic baby foods are frozen or refrigerated, there are still canned items that sell well. Both the natural flavor and the nutrients remain in the food when it is refrigerated or frozen. Organic baby foods are different according to the age group, which also explains the diversity of the products in the toddler categories, for instance. For small babies, food producers offers super-smooth purees of one or two ingredients. The intermediary food category begins at six or eight months of age, there are more ingredients used and the flavors are more refined.

The third type of organic baby foods in terms of texture is the rich-in-protein group that is a bit chunkier. Every manufacturer includes age recommendations and information on the food varieties that they provide. You can check with the local supermarket and see what they have available, and then check other brands on the Internet and see whether online orders wouldn’t make a more advantageous choice.

Now, the drawback! The ingredients are all organic, and the food processing is clean, yet ready made food remains slightly inferior to a natural health meal, using the same organic ingredients. Many mothers don’t have time to cook because of their pressing daily activities, but organic baby foods can be available at home with just a few ingredients. Why feed your baby some jarred puree, when you can make it at home from organic sweet potatoes and other natural veggies.

We may have changed the paradigm and we now prefer to save time on anything, but no prepared food you buy can compare with what you make for the baby. Jarred, frozen or refrigerated organic baby foods remain a good choice only when traveling, but not as a replacement of a natural home diet. If you can’t cook all your baby’s meals, at least make sure that at least two of them are homemade with organic ingredients. For the others, you can use ready-made organic baby foods.
