Your Child and the Baby

By Martha

Preparing for a new baby takes a lot of work, and there are many different stresses, both on parents, as well as any children you may already have. In this time of excitement, it is sometimes easy to not pay as much attention to the child/ren you may already have. However it is just as important to you other kids that they feel wanted, and cared about, so they don’t end up resenting their new sibling.

First thing you will have to expect with the arrival of a new sibling is jealousy. It is a normal process for them, because they will feel you are paying more attention to the newborn than to them, which will be very true for the first few months of the new child’s life. There are some tips though that if you apply from the beginning, these feelings won’t be so bad. It is important that the kids you already have know that you still love and care about them just as much as you did before.

While you don’t have to tell them all the details about how the new baby came about, you can tell them some things to expect. Mothers can talk about the some of the changes that are going to be happening to their body, like their growing stomach. As the new baby develops, involve them, let them feel the new baby kicking inside you. This may freak the out a little at first, but this is mainly because they are beginning to understand the reality of the situation for themselves.

It is a good idea right away that you sit down with your kids and talk to them about their new brother or sister. If you have only one child already, then you can tell them that this new sibling can be someone to play with, although certainly not right away. You can tell them that because the new baby won’t be able to take care of themselves for awhile, that you will have to do many things for them. It may be a good idea to ask your children if they would like to help with this, but never force it on them.

You can get your children involved with things as the baby grows inside of you. One of the ways they can help is by maybe going through the toys they have outgrown, and donating them to the nursery. Make sure that these toys aren’t broken, and are age appropriate. If your kids come up with toys that are too old for the new baby, tell them to set them aside, until their sibling is old enough to play with them. Other things that they can donate are books to read.

As it start to get closer to the time for the birth, sit down with your other children and talk to them again. It has been nine months, and you kids will definitely have feelings and even questions for you. Always reassure them that even though you may have to spend more time taking care of the new baby, that you are still thinking about them as well. Make sure that one of the parents is taking special time for the other kids, and switch this around as often as possible. You can also tell your kids that if there is any time that they feel neglected, to come to you and just say so.

Germs and Your Baby

By Freddie Brister

From the first minute you learned you were expecting, you began to think about germs. They’re everywhere, and if you aren’t careful you can end up becoming obsessed over that thought. The arrival of the baby brings another fresh wave of fear. What about the germs that is on the baby’s toys? What about his or her clothing? Are there germs in the bedding, or in the dirty diapers? Of course there are, but driving yourself crazy about it isn’t helping the situation, either. Using common sense and not obsessiveness is the key to protecting your baby from germs.

Your friends may tease you about your obsession, and even go so far as to say that germs are essential in building a strong immune system. This is actually true by the way, and any doctor will attest to that fact. While all this is factual, that doesn’t mean you should expose the baby to any unnecessary germs. Mother Nature will take care of that, by providing all the germ exposure your baby will need.

You basically need to keep your newborn away from possible sources of germs such as the family dog, dirt in general, and public places such as changing tables in rest rooms, and so on. The only thing that you will have no defense against is other people. Keeping the baby away, or limiting contact at first is about the best that you can do, but sometimes contact with others cannot be avoided.

People love to hold and cuddle a newborn, and this is where babies pick up many germs. The only thing that you can do is to ask everyone to wash their hands before holding your baby. Some people may take offense at this, but remember, it is your baby you are protecting. If you aren’t able to limit contact, request that people refrain from touching or kissing the baby’s face. Cuddling is fine as long as the face isn’t involved.

It is a good idea to carry hand sanitizer with you at all times. If you meet someone who wants to hold the baby, you can always ask them to use the sanitizer first. Most people will understand and be agreeable. Carry baby wipes with you also, so that you can wipe the baby’s face and hands after someone touches him.

It’s a given that you should always keep your baby away from anyone who is sick. Be aware of anyone who sounds as if they have a cold or the sniffles. Don’t be afraid to ask them if they are, or have been, ill. You are only protecting your little one. Make sure your child has all the vaccinations required, and keep them up to date.

While you want to avoid being obsessed with germs, you do want to ensure that the area the baby plays in is kept clean. Using disinfectant spray is fine and very effective when eliminating germs. However, you want to make sure that the baby does not come in contact with any household cleaners. Rinse toys and other objects that the baby may place in his or her mouth with warm water to wash off any cleaners that might of come in contact with those toys.

By Ryan Paulin

There are many things one has to consider in order to pick out the best baby bedding there is in the market. There definitely are a thousand choices out there – each piece attractive and promises a good night sleep for your baby. But what does it take to be the best choice? Of course, there are a lot of things you have to think of and plenty more questions you have to ask in order to land that great deal. This concerns your baby after all so it is only practical that you pick out the best of the best among the choices. But how will you figure out these things? Ah, don’t rush quickly to that headache medicine! No worries as we will help you through it. Here is a short list of everything you need to know when it comes to that bedding!

• Consider Your Budget

oOne of the basic things that you have to consider is of course, the budget. How much can you spend on a baby bedding? Remember that you have plenty more things you have to spend on when it comes to your baby’s needs and splurging on one item is not advisable as it is not practical.

• Comfort

oYour baby’s comfort should come first, above all things. Your baby is most sensitive during his or her earlier years and therefore should be given utmost care. Your baby’s skin is sensitive so you should pick out the softest fabric available to avoid bruising or irritations. It should also be of light material, enough to cover your baby but nothing to heavy or thick that could smother during sleep. Safety first, one thing that should be remembered.

• Maintenance

oDo not expect the baby bedding to stay clean in a long while. Your baby is expected to wet, drool and vomit on his or her sheets time after time and you are expected to clean all that as soon as your baby has started to make a mess. So you have to find a machine washable bedding that has fabric that is strong enough to withstand several washings.

• Make

oOne of the important things you have to check is what the bedding is made of. Some fabrics are too soft, some too light – others are too think and heavy. Some fabrics thread out pretty easily and others accumulate much dust.

• Room Harmony

o And of course, the room’s harmony. Each room in the house – especially your baby’s room will be following a theme. Your beddings would look good when it is in harmony with the whole theme of the room – so choose it well!

So there you have it – all the important key points you have to know when buying that important baby bedding for you baby’s good night sleep! With all these in mind, you are sure to land on that great bedding that will fit your baby best. So better get to shopping!
