Ikea, Homebase, Argos & B+Q have answered our generation’s need for cheap, flat pack furniture that will turn a front room into the spread of a style magazine in one day.  But then, a few years on, the fashion will be different and now Sally isn’t happy with the Moroccan living room anymore now she wants contemporary chic.  Now what to do? Sally chucks the stuff out and gets new stuff – now her Moroccan coffee table is on top of a huge pile of rubble on a rubbish tip – such a waste.   None of the furniture means anything to Sally and her boyfriend, it was purchased from a shed and most likely delivered by a spotty teen at an ackward time.  The only connection Sally or her partner have had with it is the cursing and explitives that went on when they put it up.  You must understand where I am going here?  Is the process of getting new, chucking out, buying new, throwing out a good one?  Shouldn’t we feel a kind of connection with the furniture that makes up our home?  It is the settee where you’ll help your one year old girl open her gifts on that special Christmas, or the kitchen table top where she’ll talk to you about what she learnt at school, and the pedestal dining table where you’ll eat the graduation dinner.  Your home is so much more than a Morocan dining suite, it shouldn’t be a collection of poor quality ply wood.  It’s about collecting memories not about buying the latest style.

That does not mean that you need to spend every weekend in antique markets and car boot sales, having said that you can pick out some quality items and it’s always a fun day out!  All I am suggesting is bury the throw away culture and buy quality furniture that are going to last.  If you treat it properley it will last half a century, easily.  That’s at least 6 sets for the average UK home owner so you can definitely afford to fork out a little more and go for better materials.  You do not have to sacrifice style either.  1st off purchase classic items that will not go in and out of style, you can change the whole look of a room just by painting the walls or adding some features.  You could even be imaginative with your furniture and modernise it yourself using some simple restoration techniques.  Wood stain is the simplest technique to master and it can utterley transform a piece.  You can give your table top a stunning antique finish or brighten your side table to go with the French theme.  It is fun, cheap and you connect with your home.   Just ensure that when you’re painting the table bases or stool bases you catch any drips!  It may sound funny but actually working with the wood and making it personal will help you to have a deeper connection with it.  It will also mean you’ll be less likely to simply chuck it away because it will have sentimental value.
