The decision to become pregnant is life altering but once made most want it to happen right away. When it comes to getting pregnant there are several ways to increase your chances. While conceiving is a natural process, there are things that can be done to quicken the process.
Stopping medications that impede chances for conception should be ceased. Obvious medications are birth control pills, but some may take medications for health ailments. A doctor should be consulted about which medications may be harmful to a baby, and if it is safe to temporarily stop taking them while trying to conceive and while pregnant.
Ovulation is very important for determining when it is the best time to conceive. Every woman with the desire to have a child, should pay close attention to their menstrual cycle. Fourteen days before the period starts is the best time to try and get pregnant. Abdominal cramps may become apparent one to two weeks before the period starts, and this is indicative of ovulation, but not the most reliable source. Vaginal secretions may also change during ovulation. It may become thin and clear. It is best to mark a calendar during each menstrual cycle so a pattern can be observed. Other options include monitoring the bodies basal temperature or purchasing a home kit for ovulation detection.
Men can also help increase the odds of pregnancy. Switching from briefs to boxers may help increase sperm count. Furthermore, a mans sperm count is higher after a good nights sleep, so having sex first thing in the morning during ovulation is helpful. Both men and women should cease smoking as it lowers sperm count for men and increases the likelihood for miscarriage and premature birth for women.
Caffeine should be decreased or eliminated if possible. Caffeine is in foods like chocolate and coffee. In moderation it is ok, but too much may make it difficult for the body to absorb iron and cause stillbirths.
Folic acid is known to prevent certain birth defects. A folic acid supplement may be taken to reduce risk of brain or spinal cord ailments. Food sources of folate include strawberries, avocados, and orange juice. The body absorbs folic acid better from supplements, but including folate rich foods into a diet is also beneficial.
A healthy weight is vital for conception. Overweight women tend to have a time that is more difficult conceiving, so it is a good idea to aim for a body mass index of 20-30. Exercise is a great way to achieve a healthy weight, but it may also interfere with ovulation. Moderate exercise two or three times a week should not affect conception efforts. Walking for thirty minutes is an excellent moderate exercise.
Getting pregnant takes planning and patience. While it may not happen immediately, there is no cause for concern unless conception efforts have been taking place for a year or more. A physician may be able to prescribe medication or suggest procedures such as IVF to increase chances.
